Master Copy:

* Restrict use - only when duplicating copy is unusable
* Keep under optimal environmental conditions

Duplicating copy:

* Use to create new user copy
* Keep under optimal environmental conditions, if possible

User copy:

* Use for regular playback by patrons

Environment:

Store and play tapes in a relatively cool and dry environment, where temperature and humidity remain constant.

Tapes in use:

* 65-70°F and 40-50% relative humidity
* Keep in similar storage environment to that of playback room

Tapes in preservation storage:

* As low as 50° F and 30% relative humidity (no lower)
* Allow to slowly acclimate to playback room temperature (at least 2 hours)

Keep storage and playback areas free from dust and other contaminants, such as food.
Protect tapes from liquids.
Protect tapes from light and heat sources.
Protect tapes from erasure:

* Break off tabs, etc.
* Avoid contact with strong magnetic fields, including speakers.

Storage:

Always store cassettes and reels in their cases/boxes to protect from dust and damage.
Store upright on end, not flat.

Winding:

Do not rewind tapes after playing: playing at normal speed will distribute "pack" for storage more evenly than rapidly rewinding or fast forwarding the tape. Rewind just before playing.
